- With which systems is Olmek compatible?
Office PC or laptop (from Windows 98 to XP SP2). Olmek also works
with PDA under Windows Pocket PC 2003 or Windows Mobile5.
- What must you do to use Olmek?
Pay for the subscription, have a valid certificate, have a personal
key, know your login and your extended pass-phrase, have an available
internet connexion and Olmek software.

- What happens if the personal
key gets lost or stolen?
You are the sole responsible for your personal key. If this
key is lost or stolen Item Centric is not able, in no case, to issue
you with a copy (unless it has been previously voluntarily shared
with Item Centric for safe keeping). Without a personal key it is
impossible to gain access to data stored in an Olmek account.

- How to protect the personal key?
Either by sharing it with Item Centric for safekeeping (escrow form),
either by copying it on a support that will then be stored in a
safe location.

- What happens if you forget your extended
pass-phrase?
You cannot have access to your account anymore. It is important
that you remember it, as Item Centric does not know it and therefore
cannot give it to you.

- What is the difference between a
password and an extended pass-phrase?
A password allows identifying yourself to a third party. In Olmek’s
case the “password” is associated to each personal key.
No third party knows it or possesses a copy. This is why the term
used is “pass-phrase” (which is kept encrypted in the
personal key). The pass-phrase is called extended because the longer
it is, the longer the time, with an exponential factor, it would
take for someone to break it.

- What is the difference between
a secure SSL connexion and the one created by Olmek?
Olmek uses an encrypted SSL connexion (port 443) in which the transmitted
data is also encrypted. If the port 443 is not available, Olmek
automatically uses the port 80 because the data is always sent encrypted
with the public key of the user.

- What is the mode used to manage
your data?
There are 3 management modes: A shared management (the same servers
are used for different clients), dedicated management (servers are
solely used for one client), and an integrated management (the servers
are part of the client’s infrastructure and are under his
management).

- How reliable is your data’s
confidentiality if it is stored on Item Centric’s servers?
No operations take place on Olmeks severs, they are passive. All
the file treatment is performed on the user’s computer or
PDA. Additionally all the information relative to a file is also
encrypted with the user’s public key. The files once treated
are kept in a database containing only encrypted bytes.

- Where are located Olmek’s
servers for the external mode (Item centric operated servers)?
The storage servers are in professional hosting companies, in several
distinct locations.

- What do you / will you know of
my use of Olmek?
Item Centric is only aware of the dates and time of connexion, the
generated volume of traffic and the storage capacity linked to an
account. Item Centric cannot have any access to the
content or the nature of any file.

- What happens in case of a server
failure?
The servers are regularly backed-up. If one of the storage servers
is temporarily out of use, it is possible to store new files without
hindrance. However to download previous files it is necessary to
wait for the server to be back on line.

- Why is Olmek stealthy?
Olmek is stealthy on 3 levels. On the corporate network level, Olmek
automatically adapts to the proxy settings (if there is one). On
the internet level, Olmek uses the SSL connexion (several billions
connexions every day) and does not need to use an E-mail program
to send files. On the PC level, every document opened through Olmek
can be named differently while keeping the original name in the
account.

- What means "nomadic access"?
Olmek allows you to have access to your files as soon as an internet
connexion is available in conjunction with any computer working
on windows.

- What are the required files to
use Olmek in a nomadic mode?
Olmek browser is an executable software (“stand alone”);
it does not need to be installed to function. You only need to have
the following files: your personal key (client.pem), the executable
olmekBrowser.exe, the public key of the identification server (root.pem),
and the Olmek settings file (olmek.ini). And, if you need it, a
language file with the extension .mui .

- Is it possible to use Olmek
in a foreign country?
Yes. Olmeks functions as soon as there is an available internet
connexion. Particularity: For the login and the extended pass-phrase
avoid using special characters or specific symbols linked to your
original country as you may not be able to find on the keyboards
available in your various destination countries.

- What means “leaves
no usable footprint” on the consulted computer terminal?
When a document is opened from your Olmek space, all associated
parameters (main file, temporary files…) are under supervision.
When you close the application that you used to access the file,
all associated files are erased, written-over, and all the electromagnetic
traces linked to this file are eliminated.

- What is the purpose of the “comment”
function associated to a file?
Olmek allows associating on a root level a comment to a file. This
function has several purposes: add remarks to different versions
of a same document, during a sharing it allows to associate a different
comment for each recipient.

- Does using Olmek involve an increase
in the network’s required band-width?
No, on the contrary as it compresses files the bandwidth necessary
to download files is reduced.

- What happens to the data upon the
closure of an account?
When an account is closed (at the end of a subscription period)
no new file can be uploaded, only the downloading capacity remains
during a certain time. The files remain the sole propriety of the
accounts owner. At any time the Olmek account can be reactivated,
by renewing the certificate (after paying for the subscription).
